Blind spots are those areas in life or in our past that we have packed away and think we dealt with. They are those emotionally driven experiences that catch us UNAWARE. The moments where we are taken off guard by a person or situation. When this happens, we can experience a range of uncomfortable feelings and react with emotionality and impulsivity. Often to the detriment of our wellbeing. When someone or something happens and we were unaware of their thoughts or feelings towards us, that insight or awareness has been hiding in our blind spot. We didn’t see it coming and we didn’t know it was there. Think about the last time you felt blindsided by someone’s behaviour or actions. Did it feel like they were talking about a different person? Was their perspective of you totally in conflict with your own self view? Discovering your blind spots needs a range of skills in your awareness ARC. Starting with strengthening your social awareness is your first step. Reading others better and connecting with those around you at a deeper level, can reduce the blind spot effect and help you explore your insecurities, shame and failures fears with more confidence should they be uncovered or exposed. WHAT IS A BLINDSPOT? Have you ever been driving a long in your car, checking the mirrors and then all of a sudden a car comes flying pass you giving you a scare because you did not see it coming. Or changed lanes to be greeted by a blaring honking sound as a car slams on its brakes? These are the results of blind spots in cars, areas where we cannot see what is behind us, to the side of us and coming up to us. Like cars, we have our own mental blind spots. Yes, it is annoying, but they are there, nonetheless. A blind spot can occur when your mind is so made up and you are so right in your belief, that despite the facts that challenge you, you will not give it up. Your blind spot, in this case, is a wall that prevents you growing.
